Considering veneers but not sure where to start? You're not alone. Some of the most common questions we hear at Comfy Dental Studios in Beverly Hills are:
- Will veneers look natural?
- Do my teeth have to be shaved down?
- How long do veneers last?
- Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
- Will they change my bite?
- How do I know if I'm actually a good candidate?
These are important questions, because beautiful veneers should involve much more than simply choosing a shade and placing porcelain over your teeth.
At Comfy Dental Studios, our approach begins with understanding your face, your smile, your bite, your gums, your natural teeth, and most importantly, what you want to change.
Our doctor and ceramist collaborate beginning at the consultation so that the person ultimately responsible for creating your porcelain is involved in understanding your goals from the beginning.
Here's what you should know before considering veneers.
1. What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made ceramic restorations that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to improve their appearance and, when appropriately planned, complement the function of your smile.
Veneers may be considered for concerns such as:
- Tooth shape or proportions
- Discoloration
- Worn or chipped teeth
- Small gaps
- Uneven teeth
- Certain minor alignment concerns
- Asymmetry
- Differences in tooth size
- An aging or worn smile
But veneers aren't automatically the right solution for every cosmetic concern. The first question shouldn't be "How many veneers do I need?" It should be "What is the healthiest and most predictable way to create the smile I want?"
That's where comprehensive smile design becomes important.
2. Will My Veneers Look Natural?
This is probably the question we hear most often. Well-designed porcelain veneers can look remarkably natural.
Natural teeth aren't perfectly flat, uniformly white blocks. They have translucency, texture, contours, subtle variations in shade, and individual characteristics that interact with light.
That's one reason our veneer consultations are different. At Comfy Dental Studios, our doctor and ceramist participate in the consultation process together. Before designing anything, we want to hear from you:
- What don't you like about your current smile?
- What do you love about it?
- Do you want a subtle refinement or a more noticeable transformation?
- Do you prefer a naturally bright smile or a whiter, more glamorous aesthetic?
- Are there specific shapes or smiles you like, or dislike?
Your ceramist isn't simply receiving instructions after your teeth have already been prepared. Having the clinical and artistic sides of the process collaborate from the beginning allows us to develop a smile that is customized to your facial features, proportions, personality, functional needs, and aesthetic goals.
Our goal isn't to give everyone the same "perfect" teeth. It's to create a smile that looks like it belongs to you.
3. Do Veneers Require Shaving Down My Natural Teeth?
Not necessarily to the degree many people imagine.
The amount of tooth preparation required depends on your existing tooth position, shape, color, bite, and the desired final result. Some cases may allow for very conservative preparation, while other cases require more modification to achieve appropriate contours, strength, and aesthetics.
Our philosophy is to preserve healthy natural tooth structure whenever clinically appropriate. This is also one reason planning before treatment is so important. Sometimes moving a tooth into a better position first can allow us to be more conservative when designing the final restoration.
4. Can I Get No-Prep Veneers?
Some patients may be candidates for minimal-prep or no-prep veneers, but no-prep veneers aren't appropriate for everyone.
Simply adding porcelain to a tooth without considering its existing position can sometimes create a result that looks bulky or unnatural.
Whether minimal-prep veneers are appropriate depends on factors including tooth position, available space, bite, existing restorations, tooth color, and the desired final shape.
The goal shouldn't be "no prep at any cost." The goal should be the most conservative approach that can safely produce a beautiful, functional and predictable result.
5. Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?
Veneers can sometimes improve the appearance of minor alignment discrepancies, but they aren't a substitute for orthodontic treatment in every situation. This is where our multidisciplinary approach can make a significant difference.
If teeth are considerably rotated, crowded, or positioned outside the ideal arch, attempting to correct everything with porcelain alone could require removing more healthy tooth structure than necessary.
Instead, we may recommend a short course of clear aligner treatment before veneers. Moving the teeth into more favorable positions first can potentially allow us to preserve more natural tooth structure and create better proportions and contours in the final smile.
Sometimes the best veneer case starts with not doing veneers immediately.
6. Why Would I Need Clear Aligners Before Veneers?
Clear aligners and veneers solve different problems. Clear aligners move teeth. Veneers primarily change the shape, shade, proportions, and visible appearance of teeth.
For certain patients, combining the two can produce a more conservative and functional result than trying to accomplish everything with porcelain.
For example, if one tooth sits too far forward, simply placing a veneer over it may make it appear even more prominent. Moving that tooth first may give the ceramist a much better foundation from which to create the final restoration.
At Comfy Dental Studios, treatment is planned around the final result, not around selling one particular procedure.
7. Why Would a Surgeon Be Involved in a Veneer Case?
Because sometimes creating a beautiful smile involves more than the teeth. The gums create the frame around your smile.
If there is significant gum asymmetry, excessive gum display, altered tooth proportions, or another periodontal concern, our surgeon may become part of the treatment-planning process. Depending on the patient's anatomy and diagnosis, periodontal or surgical treatment may sometimes be considered before the final veneers are created.
This is another reason we believe in a multidisciplinary approach to cosmetic dentistry. Our doctor, ceramist, surgeon, and clear-aligner treatment planning can work toward the same final vision when a case requires it.
Rather than treating each component independently, we begin by asking: what should the final smile look like, and what is the healthiest path to get there?
8. Can Veneers Improve a Gummy Smile?
Sometimes, but veneers alone may not address the underlying reason a smile appears gummy.
A gummy smile can be influenced by the position of the teeth, gums, lips, jaw, or a combination of factors. That's why an evaluation matters.
Some patients may benefit from changes to tooth proportions alone, while others may require periodontal treatment or another approach before veneers are completed. The correct treatment depends on why the excessive gum display is occurring.
9. How White Should I Make My Veneers?
There is no single "perfect" shade. A beautiful shade should complement your skin tone, facial features, remaining natural teeth, and personal preferences.
Some patients want an exceptionally bright smile. Others tell us, "I want people to notice my smile, but I don't want them to know I have veneers." Both are valid aesthetic goals.
During the design process, we discuss shade, translucency, texture, shape, and overall character so your final smile reflects what you consider beautiful.
10. Should I Whiten My Teeth Before Getting Veneers?
Sometimes. Porcelain itself doesn't respond to traditional teeth whitening the same way natural enamel does.
If veneers will sit next to visible natural teeth, we may recommend whitening the natural teeth before finalizing the porcelain shade. This helps us plan the veneers around the shade you want to maintain.
Whether whitening is necessary depends on which teeth are being treated and your overall smile design.
11. How Many Veneers Do I Need?
There is no universal answer. Some patients may need only a few restorations to correct specific concerns. Others may choose a broader smile transformation involving the teeth that are visible when they smile.
We evaluate your smile dynamically, not just one tooth at a time. That means considering:
- Which teeth show when you smile and speak
- Smile width
- Tooth proportions
- Symmetry
- Lip position
- How the restored teeth will transition into the untreated teeth
More veneers don't automatically mean a better smile. The right number is the number required to achieve your goals while preserving as much healthy natural tooth structure as possible.
12. How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers can last many years, but they aren't considered lifetime restorations.
Longevity varies depending on the material, preparation and bonding, bite, oral hygiene, gum health, diet, habits, and whether a patient clenches or grinds their teeth.
Long-term maintenance matters. Regular dental examinations and professional hygiene appointments allow us to monitor both the veneers and the health of the natural teeth and gums supporting them.
13. Can Veneers Stain?
High-quality dental ceramics are generally much more resistant to staining than natural tooth enamel. However, the natural teeth, margins, bonding interfaces, and surrounding oral tissues still require excellent hygiene and professional care.
Your veneers may be beautiful, but they still live in a biological environment. Maintaining that environment is part of protecting your investment.
14. Can I Get Cavities Under Veneers?
Yes. The tooth underneath a veneer is still a natural tooth. A veneer covers only part of that tooth, so decay can still develop in exposed areas or around restoration margins.
That's why brushing, interdental cleaning, professional cleanings, and regular dental examinations remain essential after cosmetic treatment.
Veneers improve teeth. They don't make teeth maintenance-free.
15. Can I Get Veneers If I Have Gum Disease?
Active gum disease generally needs to be addressed before definitive cosmetic treatment. Healthy gums provide the foundation and frame for beautiful restorative dentistry. Inflamed or unstable gum tissue can compromise both aesthetics and long-term oral health.
At Comfy Dental Studios, we evaluate periodontal health as part of treatment planning and address inflammation or disease when necessary before proceeding with final restorations.
16. What If I Grind or Clench My Teeth?
Clenching and grinding deserve special consideration before veneers. Excessive forces can place stress on both natural teeth and restorations.
If we see signs of wear, fractures, muscle tension, or TMJ dysfunction, we want to understand those forces before designing the new smile. Depending on the individual case, the treatment plan may include managing clenching or grinding and protecting the final restorations.
A beautiful smile shouldn't only look good in photographs. It needs to function in real life.
17. Do Veneers Change Your Bite?
Any restorative treatment involving the biting surfaces or contours of teeth needs to be planned with function in mind. This is why we don't separate cosmetic dentistry from functional dentistry.
When we're designing a smile, we consider how the teeth come together and how the new restorations interact with the patient's existing bite. The objective is an outcome that is both aesthetic and functional.
18. How Do I Know If I'm a Good Candidate for Veneers?
The best way to know is through a comprehensive cosmetic consultation. Good candidates typically have healthy teeth and gums or are willing to address underlying dental conditions before beginning cosmetic treatment.
But candidacy isn't determined by looking at an Instagram photo. We evaluate your:
- Teeth
- Gums
- Bite
- Alignment
- Facial proportions
- Smile dynamics
- Existing restorations
- Oral health
- Functional concerns
- Aesthetic goals
Only then can we determine whether veneers, or another treatment, make sense.
What Makes a Veneer Consultation at Comfy Dental Studios Different?
For us, the consultation isn't simply an appointment where someone tells you how many veneers you need. It's a design appointment.
At our Beverly Hills dental studio, our doctor and ceramist collaborate during the consultation to first understand your concerns and what you hope to achieve. We then begin looking at the smile from two perspectives simultaneously: function and aesthetics.
And when a case requires additional expertise, we can take a multidisciplinary approach involving our surgeon and clear aligner treatment to help create the appropriate foundation before completing the final porcelain. That might mean:
- Improving gum architecture first
- Moving certain teeth with clear aligners
- Addressing clenching or bite concerns
- Or deciding that veneers alone are appropriate
We don't believe every smile should follow the same treatment plan because no two smiles, or patients, are the same.
The Best Veneers Shouldn't Look Like "Veneers"
A successful smile makeover isn't necessarily the whitest smile or the largest number of veneers. It's one where the teeth complement the face, the proportions make sense, the bite functions appropriately, and the patient feels like the smile belongs to them.
At Comfy Dental Studios in Beverly Hills, we approach porcelain veneers as a collaboration between dentistry, function, and ceramic artistry. Our doctor and ceramist begin by listening. Then we design. And when achieving the best outcome requires more than porcelain alone, we build the right team around the patient.
Because the goal isn't simply to give you new teeth. It's to create your smile, with intention.
